The Mille Lacs Walleye Fishery

The Mille Lacs Lake is renowned for its exceptional walleye fishing. The lake’s walleye population has been the subject of much interest and study, with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) closely monitoring its health.

    When the open water fishing season begins on May 10, anglers on Mille Lacs will be able to keep two walleyes that are 17 inches or longer. This regulation is designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the walleye population, while also providing anglers with a rewarding fishing experience.

    The DNR manages the lake’s fishery, along with Ojibwe tribes that maintain fishing rights under an 1837 treaty. They set an annual harvest level, and each side manages its share.
