Prior to the pandemic, the garden’s free fishing program was a highly anticipated event. However, the program was put on hold due to the pandemic and never restarted. Fortunately, the program has now resumed, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with nature and enjoy the great outdoors. ### New Reservation System for the Fishing Program

  • Similar to the online reservation system for county campgrounds, with reservations opening at 5 p.m. two weeks in advance
  • Reservations will be available starting Wednesday, April 23 at 5 p.m.

This new reservation system aims to manage the large number of visitors eager to fish at Loko Waimaluhia. By booking in advance, visitors can secure a spot and enjoy the fishing experience without the hassle of long lines or crowded conditions. ### Fishing Rules and Regulations

  2. No barbed hooks or live bait allowed
  3. Free pole rentals available for those who need them
  4. All ages welcome, and the activity is open and free

For those who miss the opportunity to make a reservation, walk-ins are also welcome. However, it is highly recommended to book in advance to ensure a spot. The director of the Honolulu Botanical Garden, Joshlyn Sand, expressed her excitement about the reopening of the fishing program. “We are so excited to once again offer this amazing recreation and educational opportunity to our botanical garden visitors,” she said. “From helping launch the online reservation system, to making physical access to the lake easier, and getting our staff ready for the curious keiki and their ʻohana, there were a lot of improvements and upgrades that went into this reopening.”
“A big mahalo also to the garden visitors who patiently waited to once again enjoy catch-and-release fishing. We can’t wait to see the memories created through fishing at our beautiful, picturesque lake.” Sand added.
